Humans will soon be able to build huge single-piece devices in space, just like spider webs on Earth. A company called Tethers Unlimited has developed a space manufacturing system called Spider Fab that can be used to build space facilities in Earth orbits or beyond.
Spider Fab robots can help build huge radio antennas and solar arrays in the next 10 years, said Rob Hoyt, CEO and chief scientist at Tethers Unlimited. He also believes that this technology will be very promising in the future, building a solar system for use by all humans in Earth orbit.
At the heart of the Spider Fab robot concept is a robot with multiple robotic arms that use a "spinner" to make structural units and then connect these structural units one by one.
