The U.S. Department of Defense said on the 15th that the U.S. military has recently begun developing a low-power, near-zero-power sensor that can extend the useful life of sensors from weeks or months to several years. This will not only reduce the cost of using the sensor, but will also reduce the frequency of redeployment of sensors and reduce the exposure risk of maintenance personnel.
This project is called "near zero power radio frequency and sensor operation (N-ZERO)." According to a press release issued by the US Department of Defense website, existing sensors will continue to consume energy during work, but most of the electricity is used to process irrelevant data. Near-zero power sensors are usually in a "sleepy but still conscious" state. Only when they encounter a signal of interest, such as when a particular type of vehicle appears, it wakes up and ignores noise and interference.
The communique said that when the sensor is in the "sleepy but still conscious" state, the power will be less than 10 nanowatts, and its power consumption is equivalent to the automatic discharge of the watch battery, which is less than one thousandth of the current most advanced sensor power consumption. The service life is increased from several weeks or months to several years, and the maintenance costs and the need for redeployment are also reduced. The sensor's battery size is expected to drop to one-twentieth or even lower.
The communique said that near-zero-power sensors will first focus on enhancing the detection and analysis capabilities in radio frequency, electromagnetic, and sound. If successful, this project will not only benefit military sensors but will also promote the development of the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things is a network where items and articles are interconnected and can exchange information and communicate.
