The production cost of high-efficiency perovskite solar cells is greatly reduced

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) announced that they have developed technologies that can produce perovskite solar cells with conversion efficiencies as high as 20.2% at significantly lower costs than before. The related papers were published in the academic journal Nature Energy.

The conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells has recently increased significantly. In the near future there are also researchers who claim that the conversion efficiency has reached 21.0%.

The prototype of a perovskite solar cell is a dye-sensitized solar cell composed of titanium oxide, a dye, and the like. The difference is that perovskite solar cells use perovskite materials instead of “dye”, and hole transport (HTL) materials do not use iodine solutions, and most use special materials such as Spiro-OMeTAD.

In fact, this HTL material is the biggest topic. The perovskite material used in perovskite solar cells is made of lead (Pb) and organic materials, which is relatively inexpensive, while the HTL material is very expensive, and it costs 300 euros for 1 g.

The Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne used the "FDT" material, which is cheaper and only 1/5 of the existing HTL material for perovskite solar cells, achieving a conversion efficiency of 20.2%.
